His story: Sgt Robert Karnes was taken POW on December 22, 1944 and finally ended up in Stalag VIII-A, Görlitz, Landkreis Görlitz, Sachsen, Germany.
Due to the advancing Russian troops, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1945 he had to headed west together with sixteen hundred American soldiers. They arrived at the town of Duderstadt and were imprisoned in the ‘Brick Factory’ camp.
This was not an official ‘Stammlager’ (Prisoner of War Camp), but just a point where the Germans had decided to accumulate several thousand prisoners.
It was here that Sgt Robert Karnes found his death on Marche 26, 1945.
