His story: Aircraft Lockheed LIGHTNING type P-38J-15-LO #42-104086, took off from Florennes Air Base, Belgium on December 26, 1944 for a armed reconnaissance mission.
After completing dive bombing the Squadron went down to strafe enemy vehicles near Schlausenbach, Belgium. As Capt Robert F McMahon pulled up off the target, smoke and flame appeared around his canopy becoming intense. Capt McMahon continued to pull up and appeared to be completely in flames as his escape hatch came off. His plane crashed and there was no sign if Capt McMahon managed to escape with his parachute.
Capt Robert F “Bob” McMahon was taken POW and imprisoned in Stalag III-B Furstenburg, Brandenburg, Prussia, Germany, retired on duty after WWII.
