His story: 3 Sergeants of the Battalion were made acting lieutenants. They were put on trial as forward observers for what was to have been a thirty‑day period. If, at the end of this time, they were deemed satisfactory, commissions were to be requested for them. None of the three, S/Sgt. Halsey Smith, B Btry, T/Sgt. Michael J Fox Jr, and Sgt Richard C Ferguson, HQ Btry, completed the period.
On december 21, 1944, all three were captured by the Germans. None of them ever was commissioned, and of the three T/Sgt Fox alone was raised in rank upon return to the States.
S/Sgt Smith is recorded as POW in Stalag IV-B Mühlberg, Landkreis Elbe-Elster, Brandenburg, Germany.
note: S/Sgt Halsey F Smith is mentioned in a reprint of article 590th Field Artillery Battalion by Richard A. Hartman, Bn. Survey Sgt. (Copyright 1949) published by 106th Infantry Division Association.
