note: Aircraft Republic THUNDERBOLT type P-47D-26RE, nickname “Big Ass Bird”, #42-28302, took off from its base at Mourmelon-le-Grand, France, for a ground support mission. After making a frag run on gun positions North of Bastogne, the squadron proceeded ib ab armed reconnaissance. When spotted several enemy M/T they immediately attacked. During his strafing run Lt McKnight Jr. destroyed one of the vehicles, his plane was hit by light FLAK and a fire started at the accessory section. Then as the plane started down, Lt McKnight managed to bail out, floating with his parachute away from the plane and landed in some small pines.
